Negro's Musings....

Big thanks to Hudson Video and Regal Tip sticks! They have donated my new video and my signature sticks as prizes for the "El Negro Trivia Contest" on the DrumsOnTheWeb.com site! I hope you have fun with the contest... there's a couple tricky questions on there!

I am in Dallas, TX for the PAS (Percussive Arts Society) show! It feels great to be with the classical percussionists and I hope that with years we will be able to integrate our music and cultures and all kinds of percussion even more! But, definitely, the word "drums & percussion"... I'm not going to say that any more. I think drums ARE percussion! And it was very obvious that percussion has a very big voice not only in the music scene but also in education and every day's life.

What touched me most was the young drummers who played... Tony Royster, Thomas Pridgen, Michael D'Angelo... I wish I played half as well when I was 13! Had a great time at the Pearl dinner... had the chance to see again my friend Marco Minneman... hung out with Will Kennedy, Karl Perazzo & Raul Rekow, Dave DiCenso, Ignacio Berroa... let Fausto beat me at pool... saw Dom Famularo's new book!

Speaking of books... my new book "Conversations In Clave" is here!

And speaking of conversations... when Santa asks "What do you want for Christmas?", tell him that you were VERY good this year... and have these on your list... El Negro's new book "Conversations In Clave", new video "Live At The Modern Drummer Festival 2000 ", and the new cd with Giovanni & El Negro "Traveling Through Time ".

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see any of the great clinics here at PAS. (But Pam did... and there's lots of photos in the Photo Gallery!) The first day, we (Giovanni Hidalgo & me) played twice... a clinic in the afternoon and then a concert in the evening. For the concert, we put together an amazing Salsa band with Victor Mendoza and Ruben Rodriguez. And it got even better when everybody started sitting in! There were so many great players having so much fun, we had to do it again the next night!

Just don’t stop practicing...
and as the late, great Tito Puente says... "Give me five dollars..."
El Negro & (the spirit of) Pam

Negro's Musings....

I am in Tijuana, Mexico for the first International Drum Festival... me, Luis Conte, Julio Figueroa, and Joey Heredia (and his band). Pam surprised me and is here! She has been in Los Angeles (there are some great shots in the photo gallery of the many drummers she has seen in the past couple weeks....).

The festival was fun! We got there in the afternoon and went to a Press Conference at the Hard Rock Cafe. Then back to the Jai Alia arena for the festival. Luis impressed us by playing both percussion (congas and timbales) AND drumkit! Then he and the promoter, Ruben Rodriguez, played together. Then Julio was supposed to play, but he was still at the hotel trying to get a taxi back to the Jai Alia (it's Mexico!) so I judged the drum contest... Wow! Some amazing talent in Tijuana!

Julio, as always, did a great clinic... then me. After my clinic, it was very special because Julio and I got to play together! To close the show, Joey's band was killin'!

After the show, we went to a local restaurant. Even though the kitchen was already closed, they took pity on us poor hungry drummers and fed us. Thank you!! Part of the Mariachi band was still there, so we played many variations of our favorite song "Lo Mataron" and a Beatles tune or 2, and then threw in some Dark Side of the Moon...

I am back to my hotel room at 5:30am... have to leave here at 6am to catch a flight in San Diego back home.... change suitcases and fly again! I am definitely going to sleep on the plane!

Just don’t stop practicing... and buy my new video!

Negro's Musings....

It's have been so busy, it's hard to remember all the amazing things I've been doing lately! I saw Efrain Toro twice... at Berklee & Kosa. It was great to be able to be a part of his classes and see such a master! (Note from Pam.... Efrain is currently seeking a teaching position at the college level. Wherever he lands... you should definitely seek him out!)

The last concert at Berklee was with Srinivas & Global Rhythms... an ensemble of tablas, mrdangan (the indian instrument that Trichy plays) and kanjiras. Then Efrain & I sat in with Global Rhythms and it was a real world experience! I played drumset and Efrain played cajon.

Summer NAMM (I call it Summer JAMM) was a good surprise because it's alot bigger than what I thought. We had the chance to celebrate our buddy, Mike Farris' birthday with the Pearl Percussion extravaganza! Glen Caruba, Archie Pena, myself, Lalo Davila & Zoro (as guest). We were witnesses of the incredible talent of 12 year old Mike D'Angelo. After he played... nobody else wanted to play! (I wish I were 12 again!)

Kosa was as always a big drummer's hang... and for me, very special because I got my lessons! (being with Efrain... and I played a duet concert with Giovanni Hidalgo)

Been out with a million people... as a matter of fact, I'm packing my bags now to fly in a few hours to Israel! Wish me luck!

Just don’t stop practicing... and buy my new video!

Note... DrumsOnTheWeb.com is Artist-Friendly!!! When El Negro & I first decided to begin this DrumsOnTheWeb.com project, we wanted an outlet for drummer's music. You know... the side projects, the solo projects... the fun stuff!

At the time, though, the technology just wasn't here.... yet. So, we worked with Atlanta Pro Percussion (a HUGE drumshop just outside of Atlanta, GA) to bring you the best drums and percussion from around the world. Don't worry... the drumshop is still here! Check out the Drum Key area... just for drummers & percussionists!

Real audio and mp3 came about, but these just weren't up to our extremely high standards. Then we found (drum roll please....) Liquid Audio! The sound is great! The player is free! Negro's Musings....

I just finished this movie... the movie's gonna be called Latino Jazz and it's directed by Oscar winner Fernando Truebas w/ Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Big Band and w/ Michel Camillo. Live playing... I'm an actor now! (a very bad one, though! Fortunately, no speaking parts)

Getting ready to go out w/ Pattituchi on tour cause his record just came out... Doing a million records! Somebody told me that I should feel like the Latino Steve Gadd (and that was always my dream, by the way).

Finished the second Deep Rumba lp w/ Robby Ameen, Gio, Richie Flores, Pauli Mejias!

Another record w/ Mike Mossman, one w/ Juan Pablo Torres, and then another record w/ Sergio George. One more w/ Johnny Ray, then started the movie...

Then the Berklee World Fest (more on that later...) and finishing my studio! I'm tired!

Just don’t stop practicing... and see you soon.

Negro's Musings....

Hi.... El Negro here! Spent New Year's Eve in San Francisco w/ Steve Turre & Sanctified Shells (Pharoh Sanders, (legendary sax player) John Faddis (leader & conductor of Carnegie Hall Jazz Band))… and had the lifetime opportunity to share the stage welcoming the millenium with one of the percussionists I admire most… my brother Giovanni! So the millenium came with plenty of good music and special friends,

Then off to Japan w/ Kip Hanrahan, Deep Rumba... 2 drummers (me & Robby Ameen); 2 conga players (Richie Flores & Paoli Mejias (from Eddie Palmieri’s band)); now converted movie star from Buena Vista Social Club... Amadito Valdes on timbales; Andy Gonzales, bass; Charles Neville (from Neville Bros) on sax; and 2 Cuban chick singers. Great Band!

We played the Blue Note and the Japanese didn’t know if we were geniuses or totally out of our minds! Was a jam every single night... Tommy Campbell was there. (Tommy is sort of the jazz king of Tokyo right now… playing w/ everybody and doing great!) The Chili Peppers were playing Bokan – biggest arena in Tokyo - and somebody told Chad that we were playing. Chad came in the middle of a set while we were already playing… my back was to the public, and he started tickling me! It was out…. Was the most fun trip I ever had in my life!

Chad Smith jammed every night. Because we had 2 drummers, we had an extra set. One night, the Chili Peppers played in Yokohama (3 hrs away) and he took a car to come play with us!

The whole week in Tokyo was killin; 2 sold out shows every nite! Only sad part were the 14 hours on the plane to get there & come back home. But that’s life. Just drink alot........... of water! :-)

I have a few sessions and gigs... then off to NAMM!

Just don’t stop practicing... and see you soon.
