Fred Marsden

Fred Marsden, the drummer in the Merseybeat band Gerry and the Pacemakers, has died at age 66, his family said. Marsden died of cancer Saturday in Southport, England, according to a family death announcement published Tuesday in the Liverpool Echo newspaper.

The band, fronted by Marsden's brother, Gerry, was the second group signed by Brian Epstein, whose first band was The Beatles. Gerry and the Pacemakers become the first from Liverpool to have a No. 1 single with "How Do You Do It?" in 1963, followed that year by another chart-topper, "I Like It."

Later hits included "You'll Never Walk Alone,""Ferry Cross the Mersey," and "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," co-written by Fred. The group disbanded in 1967. Gerry Marsden reformed the Pacemakers in 1973 but without Fred, who had given up the music business to be a telephone operator and later established the Pacemaker driving school. Marsden is survived by his wife, Margaret, and two children. A funeral will be held Friday at Our Lady's Church in Formby.

Runaways drummer dead at 47

Sandy West, whose ferocious drumming fueled the influential all-female '70s rock band the Runaways, which she co-founded with Joan Jett, has died of lung cancer. She was 47.

West died Saturday night at a hospice in San Dimas, east of Los Angeles, her manager Mara Fox said. She was diagnosed a year ago.

West was only 16 when she started the Runaways in 1975 with Jett, a singer and guitarist.

Along with band members Lita Ford and Cherie Currie, they had such hits as "Cherry Bomb" and "Born to Be Bad."

"We shared the dream of girls playing rock and roll. Sandy was an exuberant and powerful drummer," Jett said in a statement. "I am overcome from the loss of my friend. I always told her we changed the world."

Born in 1959 and raised in Huntington Beach, West was a bona fide California girl, splitting her time between surfing and skiing, Currie said.

After West's grandfather bought her a drum kit, she channeled her athleticism into music.

The Runaways headlined shows with such performers as Cheap Trick and Tom Petty as opening acts.

Following the band's breakup in 1979, West continued to perform as a singer, guitarist and drummer with the Sandy West Band. She also released a solo CD.

"Sandy West loved her fans, her friends and family almost to a fault," Currie said in a statement. "It will never be the same for me again to step on a stage, because Sandy West was the best and I will miss her forever."

West completed her memoirs before she died, and Fox said she hoped to get the book published.

West is survived by her mother, Jeri Williams, stepfather Dick Williams, and six sisters.

A public memorial in Southern California for friends and family is pending, Fox said.

Julio Figueroa

Hello friends!

I hope that you're all doing great!!!

It's been a while since my last update so I would like to give you a heads up on what's going on.

We finally moved to a beautiful new home ... and we are now located right on the border of Orange County and Los Angeles County... I'm building a professional Recording Studio in our new home and it should be up and running before the New Year comes around. For those of you that always call me for remote recordings the time has arrived!!! I'll finally be able to offer you state of the art Drums and Percussion tracks. I'll keep you posted!

I'm still doing the Musical Direction and Drumming for Latin Artist Gloria Trevi and we have a new album out entitled "Trayectoria". The album is doing great and it already reached the Number one position on the Latin Billboard Charts. It also went Gold in less than 2 months!!! Please refer to the calendar / Live link on my website www.juliofigueroa.com for our upcoming dates.

I've recently performed live with legendary producer David Foster backing up Andrea Bocelli, Baby Face, Katharine McPhee and Johnny Mathis. The all-star band included two of my all time music heroes! Mr. Nathan East on Bass and Mr. Greg Phillinganes on Keyboards..... AMAZING!!!

I have also performed recently live with Latin pop bands RBD and La 5ta Estacion and I also recorded a live DVD with contemporary Christian artist Charles Billingsley produced by the Maestro Tom Brooks! The band featured the amazing Tom Brooks on keys, Gregg Vail on sax, Melvin Davis on bass and Paul Jackson Jr. on guitar among others.

My latest Studio recording sessions included recording for legendary R&B star Patti Labelle, Bassist master Melvin Davis upcoming solo CD, The Castaways with heavyweight producer Dain Blair, RBD (Unplugged DVD at the Pantages Theatre), Fully, Jon Montalban (currently number one on airplay in many Spanish Christian radio stations around the US), Jose Luis Garcia, Michelle Endicott & Hidden Word, Lucas Seren, Jose Feliciano and I have also played all drums and percussion tracks for Bassist Hussain Jiffry's upcoming Bass instructional DVD.

And finally the website for our record label Discos Pampa is up and running!!! Please check it out at www.discospampa.com Our artists are doing great out there! My song "Dios Amo" recorded by Edwin Maldonado has recently reached the number one radio airplay position in Puerto Rico and Jose Luis Garcia's Album "Eres Grande" is number one in Honduras.

This year to date I have been very busy in the studio with several projects from Singer Songwriters to Jazz and Soul Groups. Several new releases for both independent and labeled artists have come out. Performance schedule has changed quite a bit. After 10 years working with one group exclusively I have stepped back to become once again an independent artist opening up my schedule to be able to work with more diverse musical environments as well as produce my own concerts and projects. Currently in the studio working on my third release featuring duets with several different artists. Continuing to keep a very busy schedule with my educational workshops and master classes. Just licensed one of my workshops to Community Learning a company that develops curriculum for enrichment organizations as well as elementary schools. This program is a 15 week course based on making and playing percussion instruments made out of found objects. Highlighting Science, Math, Language, Humanities and History. It features a teacher’s course book, student workbooks, all the materials needed so that each student will complete 5 different instruments, and a cd / dvd for both audio and video support. It is being sold throughout North America with the future open to the rest of the world.

Aldo Mazza

It's been a busy summer season for Canadian drummer / percussionist Aldo Mazza!

Montreal percussionist and drummer, Aldo Mazza (Répercussion, Director and Founder of the KoSA International Percussion Workshops & Festivals, Founder of the KoSA Academy) has had quite a busy summer. Aldo, along with KoSA Project's Coordinator Dr. Jolán Kovács, organized last June the first KoSA Montreal Weekend drums & percussion intensive workshop. Top local and international faculty such as Paul Picard, Jerry Mercer, Tony Albino, Dom Famularo, Nasyr Abdul- Al - Khabir, Pierre Cormier, Camil Belisle and Giampaolo Scatozza, gave hands-on classes on various musical styles. The weekend was such a resounding success that plans are underway for the 2nd edition in 2007
(www.kosamusic.com).

In July, Aldo performed a month-long run with singer Frank Sinatra Jr. as well as hosting several drum circle events including workshops and a big televised drum jam at Montreal's Old Port as part of "Les Rythmes du Monde Festival" (World Rhythm Festival).

In August, Aldo and his wife Jolan, along with the KoSA team, held the eleventh edition of the KoSA International Percussion Workshops and Festival at Johnson State College in Johnson, Vermont. This annual week-long program featured some of the top artists on the planet giving daily hands-on classes and performing each night in concerts open to the public. Participants from around the globe and local audiences were treated to some very special and exciting musical moments.

Following KoSA, Aldo was invited to participate in "Jazzworks", a Canadian jazz camp where he taught classes in latin percussion as well as directing the latin-jazz ensembles. This was a great musical ending to the Aldo's summer activities.

Upcoming events for Aldo include perfoming with Montreal young singing sensation NIKKI. He will also be leading a one week study program in Cuba ( KoSA Cuba's 6th edition), October 22-29 in Havana, Cuba at the prestigious Havana Libre Hotel during the Havana Drum Festival (Fiesta del Tambor). For more information, please visit

In addition, I will also be doing some clinics for Taye in November on the west coast and we are looking to hit the mid west and east coast for some dates in early 2007. John JR Robinson

... On the record side I was reunited with David Benoit and the boys recording a great jazz CD called, "Full Circle". I was honored to record with fellow Iowan, Andy Williams. Some other artists include Marc Antonio Solis, Bill Medley, a new artist on Concord named Jimmy Demers which also reunited my old John Fogerty band from 1986, Neil Stubenhaus on bass and Alan Pasqua on keyboards. From the TV show INXS, Mig Iyesa's new CD will be a hit. I have recorded with Luis Miguel since he was 15. I just finished his new Christmas CD, which featured arrangements by Juan Carlos Calderon. Also, I'm in a blues band called M7 Blue Lifers produced by Mike Post. This band is a dream of Mikes to assemble the greatest blues artists to make a CD. We did and it's a mother! It features Mike Finnegan, Keb Mo, Sonny Landreth, Snuffy Walden, Amy Keys, David Morgan and Stanley Barons. Bob Glaub and myself held them down. I also recorded a live AOL concert for Cheyenne.

Some of the new motion pictures I played on are, RV, Garfield 2, School For Scoundrels, Talladega Nights [The Ballad of Ricky Bobby] and the biggest, Pirates of the Caribbean [Dead Man's Chest]. Another great Yamaha Groove night passed in January with everyone contributing at the highest level.

I recorded a world jingle for Sprite that was used during the NBA finals. We had a very successful concert for Muhammad Ali and his concert to cure Parkinson's disease. Also, I just finished the Grammy Foundation concert, which gives the youth opportunities for musical advancement and growth. I play for the David Foster Foundation in Vancouver, which helps families in need of organ transplants. And finally, the JC Penney Jam, which will air on CBS in HD on 8/22. This concert features the greatest players in the world.

The Herbie Hancock CD and DVD, Possibilities got a Grammy nomination and the song Love Comes To Town featured Joss Stone and Johnny Lang. And the Burt Bacharach CD, At This Time, won the Grammy!

I had the greatest pleasure of working one on one with the great John Williams. I played drums on his brand new NFL themes for NBC, which airs on 8/6/06. This music was very intense. I used a lot of double-pedal action. John Williams should be the fifth person on Mount Rushmore!

Mark Williamson, Michael Thompson and I have been mixing with the great Bill Schnee and Darius Fong our new CD for TRW. We are almost done! This CD is pure rock and roll.

And finally, I will be touring this fall with the great Barbra Streisand in 18 cities. Until next time ...

John "Vatos" Hernandez

Hi Pam, Great seeing you last week, these are my sins.

Last year I did show with only Internet advertising and sold out The Grove of Anaheim. The Booker's were so excited, along with the Grove this year they put together a show at The Greek.

I call it a "Tribute to Halloween" We are playing original music by Steve Bartek, John Avila, Sam Phipps, Myself, and of course Oingo Biongo. (Danny Elfman).

October 20Th at the Greek we have Dramarama and "X" opening the show.
October 21st at the Grove of Anaheim we have BTU4 and the Ebola Orchestra opening the show.

I'm producing the whole sha-bang which is difficult without a upfront budget. We recorded the last show and are in the last days of mixing. The tracks are pumping, hopefully that will do well. KROQ and JACK- FM are promoting the show so I am sure we will get some air play. Aside from session here, session there, The BT4 band, some local swing bands, and working with some composers, that's about it till November.

Please always be safe
Thanks John "Vatos" Hernandez

Miguel 'Angá' Diaz, 45; Afro-Cuban Music's Conga Drum Master

Cuban percussionist Miguel "Angá" Diaz, an acclaimed conga master who perfected a dazzling five-drum technique with a versatility that allowed him to span genres from progressive jazz to traditional Afro-Cuban standards, has died. He was 45.

Diaz, who was also a composer and arranger, suffered a heart attack Wednesday at his home in San Sadurní d'Anoia, a small town east of Barcelona, where he had recently moved in search of a more serene lifestyle. His body was discovered by a student who had gone to the home for a lesson, according to a spokesman for his label, London-based World Circuit records.

The news came as a shock in music circles, where Diaz is hailed as one of the world's leading exponents of Afro-Cuban percussion, a complex and physically demanding discipline.

Friends who had talked to Diaz a few hours before his death said he was in good spirits with a full agenda of touring and recording, including a show with the Cuban fusion group Síntesis scheduled for that night. During a stop in London earlier this year, the musician was ebullient with new ideas and excited about future projects, said World Circuit owner Nick Gold, a co-producer of Diaz's debut album as a bandleader, 2005's boldly experimental "Echu Mingua."

Gold met Diaz in Havana in 1996 during the first recording session by the Afro-Cuban All Stars, a precursor to the Buena Vista Social Club. Gold regularly called on Diaz to work on solo albums by Buena Vista alumni, including singer Ibrahim Ferrer, bassist Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez and guitarists Ry Cooder and Manuel Galbán.

"After working with Angá as a conga player, no one else would do," Gold said Friday by phone from England. "Technically, he was just extraordinary. And he seemed to have no musical barriers whatsoever."

Jazz pianist Omar Sosa, who is also based in Barcelona and toured frequently with Diaz in his group, said the conga player had evolved far beyond his traditional instrument. For a time, recalled Sosa, Diaz even expropriated a Gymboree toy from his son because it made a unique wave-like sound the percussionist liked.

"He was always creative, that's for sure," said Sosa, whose upcoming CD, "Live à FIP," features Angá on a complex of percussion instruments. "It's astounding how many sonic colors you hear in his work. The knowledge he had, the wisdom, was just gigantic. He understood the entire language of Afro-Cuban percussion."

Sosa spoke by phone Friday from Barcelona shortly after an emotional funeral service for Diaz that featured a performance of the heart-wrenching bolero "Toda Una Vida" ("All Life Long") by Diaz's brother and bandmate, Juan "El Indio." The artist's remains were to be cremated and his ashes sent back to Cuba, where his parents live in his childhood home.

Miguel Aurelio Díaz Zayas was born in 1961 in San Juan y Martinez in Pinar del Rio province. He inherited his nickname from his father, Aurelio Diaz Fernandes, the original Angá.

He showed prodigious talent as a child and started formal percussion studies by the age of 10. Four years later, he earned a scholarship to the National School of Art in Havana, where he also had the chance to work with renowned Cuban conguero Tata Güines and drummer Guillermo Barretto.

After college, he launched his professional career with the avant-garde group Opus 13, touring and recording with them for nine years, mostly in the 1980s. It was a period of intense experimentation in Cuban dance music, a prelude to the historic explosion of Afro-Cuban dance bands in the 1990s.

When the explosion came, Diaz was at the epicenter as percussionist with Irakere, Cuba's preeminent progressive band, led by pianist Chucho Valdés. Diaz had the challenging task of replacing the band's original percussionist, the late Jorge "El Nino" Alfonso.

"Those were big shoes to fill, but Angá pulled it off," said Raul Pineda, a former member of Valdés' quartet who lives in Los Angeles. "It was difficult both musically and physically, because of Irakere's challenging arrangements and because in Cuba, unlike here, bands would play for three hours straight."

It was in Irakere that Diaz perfected the five-conga technique used by his predecessor.

"He could do things [on congas] that could only be dreamed of before he came on the scene," said Paul de Castro, an expert in Afro-Latin music who teaches at Cal State L.A. "Angá was one of the innovators in conga technique."

Diaz went on his own in 1994, recording "Pasaporte" with his conga hero, Güines. He set up a home in Paris, where he married, started a family and eventually became a French citizen, dividing his time between France and Cuba.

In 1996, he joined Roy Hargrove's band Crisol, recording on the U.S. trumpeter's Grammy-winning album, "Habana." He went on to record with a diverse set of artists, from the biting debut album by Cuba's hip-hop trio Orishas to graceful works by Buena Vista veterans Ruben Gonzalez and Omara Portuondo.

After moving to Barcelona in 2003, Diaz kept up an intense schedule of work. A week before his death, Diaz appeared in Barcelona with his new ensemble, fusing popular Brazilian music with Afro-Cuban jazz. He also recently formed a trio with Cachaito and flamenco pianist Chano Dominguez. And the new live album, recorded by Radio France, is due for release Oct. 10 on Sosa's Otá Records.

In addition to his father and brother, Diaz is survived by his mother, Maria Luisa Zayas Hernandez; twin 12-year-old daughters, Lisa and Naomi of Paris; and their half sister, Yanira, 22, of Miami.

The Hip Pickles

Well it's official. The Hip Pickles won a "Drummie" Award for 2006.

The Hip Pickles were voted number one Percussion Ensemble for the 3rd straight year in Drum Magazine. Runners up were Stomp and Blue Man Group and certainly we're honored to even be mentioned in the same breath as those groups

I want to say thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for us. We appreciate your support and encouragement and giving us this huge honor.

On a personal note, I was quite honored to be voted runner up in the Drum Circle Facilitator category in the Drummie balloting.

I have a real passion for World Percussion and Drum Circles and I am thrilled, that people would put me in the company of Jim Griener, Arthur Hill and Christine Stevens. These folks are the tops in the field and I am humbled to be mentioned in their company. Again, a big thank you for anyone who supported me for this honor. I don't view myself in their league, but I will work harder to be worthy to be in their company.

And finally, I would like to share with you, my being selected to lead and facilitate the Friday night Drum Circle at the Percussive Arts Society's International Convention in Austin Texas this coming November. I'm so excited about this opportunity. I led a Circle at the 2003 Convention in Kentucky and that was just a off the charts experience. The drummers were just so good and the circle was amazing!

Otherwise, the Hip Pickles have had a very active summer of really fun performances and we are looking forward to a very busy fall season.
Hopefully we get to see you at one.

All the Best

Taku Hirano

Just a head's up that I am performing on the dvd, "From The Big Apple To The Big Easy: The Concert For New Orleans." It will be released on August 22, and can be purchased on Amazon.

The concert was recorded on September 20, 2005 at Madison Square Garden, and features performances by Jimmy Buffett, Ry Cooder, Elvis Costello, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, John Fogerty, Elton John, Diana Krall, Lenny Kravitz, Cyndi Lauper, Dave Matthews, Bette Midler, Rebirth Brass Band, Simon & Garfunkel, Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, Buckwheat Zydeco, and my in-laws, The Meters and The Neville Brothers.

I performed with Bette Midler for this amazing event. It was hosted by our family friend, Ed Bradley, and my wife, Arthel, was there covering it for Fox. It was definitely a night that I will never forget, especially considering it hit so close to home since all of my in-laws lost everything, and Arthel was in the trenches for three weeks covering the aftermath in New Orleans with her camera crew.

You will notice I am bashing a green SONOR kit, big ole SABIAN crashes, REMO heads, PROMARK sticks, QWIKSTIX stick holders and a RHYTHMTECH crasher (that I wanted to setup but didn't have time or the additonal hardware from the backline company to set it up)! THANKS!!!!

Thanks again and we'll see you soon on Cold Pizza, Fox and Friends, and Jimmy Kimmel! Jason's single for "Amarillo Sky" and it's video are climbing the charts!

Virgil Donati

Hi everyone,

Brett Garsed and Jimmy Johnson interface with me to elevate my music!

Firstly, as I mentioned in the last newsletter, Derek and I are taking time to finally complete the next Planet X record. Brett Garsed was in town two weeks ago, and worked with us for two days to complete some of his guitar overdubs. His playing was absolutely mercurial. Earlier this week I had Jimmy Johnson come in to play on one of the tracks - simply masterful. The track Jimmy played on is one of the music minus drums tracks I put up a while back. It has gone through several changes since that time.... I completely re-wrote the verses, and further developed some of the piano parts. Those who have heard the original version will be able to compare. The mixing process begins this coming week.

I have also been in the studio playing on several Bunny Brunel productions. One being the iconic French artist Michel Polnareff, the other, Bollywood star Sandeep Chowta. Quite an eclectic mix!

Last night we were in Phantom Studio (Simon Phillips' studio) working on the latter.

I'm often asked what it is that I'm currently working on with my drumming, so I wanted to share one idea with you. Lately I've been working on developing more expression with the bass drums, and one way of doing that is with the creative use of accents. Setting up a looping 'sub-pulse' with the feet, while playing the main groove / pulse with the hands can create very exciting interactive sounds...

Be sure to check out some of my online lessons for purchase where I break down different exercises on charts and video.

Terry Silverlight

Hello!

Just wanted to summarize my tour of Japan recently with the Manhattan Jazz Orchestra, say a little about my Terry Silverlight Band performance in Manhattan last week, and a few other things... Below is a brief description of the tour and little bit about my band performance. Also, I had been meaning to mention that I'm included on the www.drummerworld.com and www.drumradio.com websites. Below are some links.

Thank you so much!
Terry

Terry Silverlight just returned from a three week tour of Japanese concert halls with the Manhattan Jazz Orchestra. The MJO is a 16-piece band lead by arranger David Matthews (arranger for James Brown 1970-1975, arranger for Paul Simon including "Still Crazy After All These Years", Billy Joel, and staff arranger at CTI Records 1976-1980). This is Terry's 8th tour of Japan with this band and has recorded eight CDs with them, several having won top awards in Japan's Swing Journal magazine. Each concert on this tour was completely sold out (2000-5000 seat halls). Terry also participated in three clinic performances on the tour for high school and college age students. The MJO consists of New York's finest musicians including (tours and CDs varies), Randy Brecker, Bill Watrous, Jim Pugh, Lew Soloff, Ryan Kisor, Bill Evans, Chris Hunter.

Upon Terry's return, he performed live with his Terry Silverlight Band at the Metropolitan Café in Manhattan. The evening featured Terry's drumming and his original music along with David Letterman Show bassist Will Lee, saxaphonist David Mann, trumpeter Tony Kadleck, and a long awaited reunion with Terry's brother, keyboardist Barry Miles. The room was packed.

Junior Tirado

Junior Tirado Passes Away
Renown Drum Artisan

New York, NY - July 10, 2006 -- Natalio Tirado, Jr. passed away today at 12:45 p.m. at Bellevue Hospital where he had been transferred since the beginning of the year. Junior, as he was known, had suffered a major heart attack two years ago and remained in a coma on life support throughout.

A master drum maker, Junior was known the world over for his meticulous work with African drums including congas, bongos, hand drums (panderos) as well as bomba (barilles) and bata drums. The late percussionist and bandleader Mongo Santamaria had Junior make him eight drums while vocalist Ruben Blades commissioned Junior to make bongos for him. Jerry Gonzalez had a pair of Junior congas and as of late, the orchestra from Japan, Orquesta La Luz commissioned congas from the master artisan. He also refurbished traditional African drums.

Born in Alto Rey, Puerto Rico on August 23, 1938 Junior was a singer and a dancer on television. He would also make bomba drums for local bands before he arrived in New York in 1962 as a singer with the Arsenio Rodriguez orchestra. He then played bongos and congas with the Tito Rodriguez orchestra before fully dedicating himself to the craftsmanship of drum making in 1963.

Junior Tirado is survived by his wife Violeta and two daughters Xiomara and Dinorah as well as five grandchildren.

He will be viewed at Ortiz Funeral Home at 201 Havemeyer Street in Brooklyn on Thursday from 4 - 9 p.m. and on Friday from 2 - 9 p.m. All percussionists are invited to play at the viewing.

Natalio Tirado, Jr. will be buried on Saturday at the Rosedale Cemetery in New Jersey.

DrumJungle Pumps Up The Heat At Memorable Beatles "Love" Gala

(Las Vegas, NV) Internationally renowned percussionist Daniel de los Reyes and his DRUMJUNGLE troupe raised the already sizzling 100+ degree Las Vegas temperatures with their powerful high-energy drum / percussion performance playing nonstop dance music for the frenzied crowd at the Cirque du Soleil Beatles "Love" world premiere party June 30th at the Mirage Las Vegas.

Red carpet premiere show guests included Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, and Olivia Harrison. Other familiar faces were Deborah Harry (Blondie), Steven Van Zandt (Bruce Springsteen, The Sopranos), Billy Crystal and Lauren Hutton appearing simply as fans.

The spectacular premiere gala introduced guests to a world inspired by the animated movie "Yellow Submarine" complete with a huge inflatable yellow submarine! The wall-to-wall crowd was surrounded by retro décor complete with psychedelic projections creating a surreal wonderland that was then combined with the groundbreaking dance music of DrumJungle.

Percussionist and DrumJungle leader Daniel de los Reyes, Canadian percussionist Christian Lagueux (Lionel Richie, Ricky Martin, Noizy Neighbors, Quicksound), Cuban drum powerhouse Raul Pineda (Sintesis, Macina Loca, Chucho Valdez), dancers, and singers brought the house down with their high-energy performance making it impossible to keep enthusiastic guests from jumping onstage with the drummers as everyone partied well into the early morning hours.

"The dance music was fantastic. The perfect finale to a very magical night." - Attendee

In addition to their June 30th Cirque du Soleil Beatles "Love" party and July 2nd Mt. Charleston Jazz Festival performances, Daniel de los Reyes and DrumJungle Inc. have been featured in DRUM! Magazine and also are featured in the July issue of the popular Musico Pro magazine. DrumJungle Inc. shows are sponsored by Latin Percussion, DW Drums, Sabian cymbals, Regal Tip sticks, M-Audio software, and Sennhieser microphones.

Foreststorn "Chico" Hamilton

Join jazz drummer and bandleader and NEA Jazz Master Foreststorn "Chico" Hamilton as he HITS with four breathtakingly remarkable new releases on Joyous Shout! in 2006 in celebration of his 85th birthday.

With each successive release turning up the heat on the 85th Birthday celebration, Chico brings back the FUNK on "6th Avenue Romp". Continuing the amazing run of guest spots are: vocalist Brenna Bavis and Allman Brothers drummer Jaimoe on the Smokey Robinson gem "You Really Got A Hold On Me"; trumpeter Jon Faddis' muted musings alongside Chico's vocals on "Take The A Train"; guitarist Shuggie Otis' blistering soloistics on a swinging arrangement of T-Bone Walker's "Strollin’ with Bone"; and reprising his special guest appearances on "Juniflip" and "Believe" is former Hamilton band member trombonist George Bohanon augmenting Chico’s working "Euphoria" group on the Paul Ramsey penned shuffle powerhouse "Thunderwalk". Slipping up inside songs out of the R & B cannon, Chico and his "Euphoria" group spin swinging bold and beautiful arrangements of timeless classics including: Jr. Walker & The Allstars "Cleo’s Mood" and "Cleo's Back"; Bill Wither's "Ain't Got No Sunshine"; Blaze's "Elevation"; Booker T & The MG's "Chicken Pox"; and Stevie Wonder's "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever). Rounding out the set is Cary DeNigris swinging a hole in your head on the Basie chestnut "Topsy", propelled by Chico's high-hat and ride cymbal. 6th Avenue is where Chico lived in LA before moving to NYC in the mid-60's, and "6th Avenue Romp" reads like an encyclopedia of patented Hamilton grooves: whether it be that classic "Conquistadors" beat turning "Cleo's Mood" into a guaranteed dance floor stomper; the swinging cymbal-snare-bass drum syncopation of "You Really Got A Hold On Me", "Take The A Train", "Strollin’ With Bone", "Thunderwalk", and "Gotta Make Things Right"; the brush & stick bossa on "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever); or the bass drum back beat driven funk of "Ain’t No Sunshine", "Chicken Pox", and "Cleo's Back"- every track is a lesson in the Hamiltonian drum ethic!!

Always HIP and ever the consummate modernist, Chico invites the listener to join him and his cohorts in bringing back the funk on "6th Avenue Romp", illustrating why Foreststorn "Chico" Hamilton is a NEA Jazz Master and Still The Man for Every Generation!!

Completing this celebration of Chico's 85th year, hitting the street 9/19/06 (a few days before Chico's 85th Birthday on 9/21/06) is "Heritage". These four unique releases are being pressed up in the CD w/ Mini-LP covers format.

Albert Bouchard

The Brain Surgeons are the brainstorm of Albert Bouchard, whose prodigious songwriting, arrangements and creative drumming drove the legendary Blue Öyster Cult to platinum sales and arena rock status. Contrary to the hilarious Saturday Night Live skit, he's the dude who really put the cowbell in "Don't Fear the Reaper." More important, his influence is acknowledged by rock pioneers from the Minutemen (whose Mike Watt still covers his "The Red and the Black" nightly) to Metallica, whose version of his classic "Astronomy." went quadruple-platinum in the U.S. alone. The rare artist who's shared stages with both Jimi Hendrix and Sonic Youth, his vision, chops and giant Godzilla mask burn brightly as ever with the Brain Surgeons, who've released seven highly praised CDs on Cellsum Records and built a devoted cult following over a decade of hard touring and great word-of-mouth. The band also features Deborah Frost, an ex-rock critic in the tradition of Patti Smith and Chrissie Hynde on vocals and guitar. Their newest and perhaps most outrageous weapon is lead guitarist Ross the Boss (Dictators, Manowar). One of the most powerful and best-loved guitarists ever to emerge from the New York scene, Ross the Boss has often made the band he's in sound like a supergroup. With Bouchard, who's longed to collaborate with him ever since the Dictators opened for Blue Öyster Cult, he's really in one. Denial Of Death, an album of completely new material written and recorded with Ross can be ordered now from the Merch department at www.cellsum.com. Details of international distribution deal and 2006 tour dates are forthcoming.

Jorge Bermudez

Hola Mi Gente 8-)!

How is everyone? I hope life is showing all of you much love. Here are 2 new films to watch out for that have Bermudez Triangle tunes in them.

"Dorm Daze 2" will be released to theatres soon. It features July Playboy Playmate, lovely and sexy Cuban actress Vida Guerra. It is a comedy :-) .

www.dormdaze2themovie.com

"God's Waiting List" is a wonderfully conceived story about a love triangle between 2 siblings and their mutual love interest "Rachel" portrayed beautifully by Nian Aster. She gives a riveting performance in her character's fall from grace. Nian wrote the screenplay as well.

Notable actors Roger "Guenveur" Smith from "Malcom X", Nicki Micheaux from"The Shield", and Ingrid Oliu from "Real Women Have Curves" round out the cast. It was directed by screenwriter Duane Adler. He wrote the screenplay for "Save The Last Dance".

Gracias for your support!

It is with great joy that I announce that my Bermudez Triangle tunes are now available for purchase at iTunes. I have 2 CD'S now but in the upcoming days their will be a total of 4 CD compilations and a new CD single.

Please pass the good word along to a friend. Much Love to all!

... I played on the new Dave Gilmour CD, On an Island, which was a big hit in the USA for the past 6 months. Also doing tracks now for the first new (with new original songs) Roxy Music album since Avalon was released in 1982. I was the drummer in the London production of The Lion King for 5 years. That was the hardest I have ever worked in my life. Great experience however...

Basically I am just living a quiet life out in the English countryside with Jan, and my 4 cats. All is cool...

Sincerely,
Andy

Taku Hirano

Hi all! Since completing Stevie Nicks' Australia / New Zealand tour, I have been over to Italy twice with Giorgia, a female Italian popstar, performing in Torino at the Paralympic Winter Games and in Milan. I have also been performing with the Japanese world music group Rin'. This group is comprised of three young women who play all traditional Japanese instruments (koto, 17-string koto, biwa, shakuhatchi, and shamisen). They fuse their music with loops and yours truly on live percussion. We ended up doing some shows in Los Angeles with Lisa Loeb singing, and in New York with Leigh Nash (of Sixpence None The Richer) singing. I also recently did a show with Stevie Nicks in Las Vegas at the Wynn, and got to hang out with Pam Gore for a quick second!

I am currently in Tokyo rehearsing with Utada Hikaru. At 22, Hikaru has become the largest selling Japanese artist with 40 million in record sales to date. Her debut album sold 30 million when she was 15... not bad in a country of 120 million! I will be touring with her in Japan until mid-September.

Aldo Mazza leaves his mark in Manitoba!

Montreal percussionist and drummer, Aldo Mazza (Répercussion, Director and Founder of the KoSA Percussion Workshops & Festival, Founder of the KoSA Academy) just returned from a successful clinic tour in Manitoba (Canada) where he spent four days adjudicating at the Brandon Jazz Festival. During the event, Aldo gave several workshops to band directors and clinics in Latin percussion rhythms and techniques. Aldo then continued his tour of Manitoba in Winnipeg (The Drum Cellar) where a crowd of 250 drum and percussion enthusiasts gathered to take in his classes in Latin rhythms. Back in his hometown of Montreal (Canada), Aldo has recently performed with legendary singer and artist Petula Clark, and the Savoy-Ellington singers.

He is also in demand in Montreal as a drum circle facilitator for corporate events – a new venture for Aldo who in 2005 started the successful company – "Drumparties.com".

On June 3 & 4 Aldo will be busy in Montreal when KoSA presents its first KoSA Montreal Weekend workshop featuring Dom Famularo, Paul Picard, Jerry Mercer, Camil Belisle, Giampaolo Scatozza, Robert Leroux, Tony Albino, Pierre Cornier and Nasyr A. Al-Khabir.

In the coming months, Aldo will be performing several shows in Montreal accompanying the famed singer Frank Sinatra Jr. Of course, this August, don't forget to catch Aldo at his usual hang in Vermont for the 11th edition of the KoSA International Percussion Workshops and Festival. This year's event promises to be yet again full of surprises and will certainly not disappoint. Aldo will be teaching and performing along with such renowned artists as Antonio Sanchez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Bernard Purdie, to name but a few.

Monsters invade

"New York Monsters" conjures up images of loud, rowdy metal bands from Brooklyn, but the New York Monsters that will work tonight at Luna play a brand of funk / jazz / blues. The monster part comes about because the band features monstrous talent.

The lineup is two players from New York, keyboard and accordion ace and composer Brian Mitchell and guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, clinician, etc. Matt Smith, plus three Texas cats, drummer Ernie "Murphy" Durawa, saxophonist Joe Morales and bassist Rich Stanmyre.

Mitchell has played accordion or keyboards with a dizzying array of people from Les Paul to Joan Osborne, from Jeff Buckley to Shemekia Copeland.

Smith plays just about everything with strings, guitar, mandocello, banjo, charango, etc., etc. A clinician with Hamer and Ovation guitars and a contributor to Guitar Player magazine, Smith is working with two new CDs, "What I Feel for You" and "Chop Shop."

Durawa, a San Antonio native, has worked with Spot Barnett, the Texas Tornados and jazz groups galore. If he says these guys are monsters, they're monsters.

Memo Acevedo

Hello friends...

I'd like to introduce to you my Timbale stick (hickory) that was just put out by REGAL TIP and described as a "hot item" by the Drum Business magazine.

I hope you can give it a try and give me an honest feedback. It'll help for you to request it at your local store. My children will be eternally grateful to you :-)

It is a product of two months pain in my hand. At one point I thought "I've never gotten pain from playing with regular drum sticks". I realized that with the average timbale stick you have to apply more pressure to hold it, especially when you have to play a long solo or in a loud situation, because of how thin it is.

It has a couple of advantages; One, it can be used on the drum set as well. Two, you can turn it around when you need to play the bongo bell, getting a deeper tone.

The one thing is; it is different, so it'll take a little adaptation.

Best!
Memo

Don Alias

Don Alias, 66, Percussionist and Sideman, Is Dead

By Nate Chinen

Don Alias, a percussionist who had a long career as a sought-after sideman, working with an illustrious array of artists in jazz and pop including Nina Simone, Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell, died on March 28 at his home in Manhattan. He was 66.

His death was announced by Melanie Futorian, his companion, who said the cause was under investigation.

Born Charles Donald Alias to Caribbean parents in New York, Mr. Alias liked to say that he learned percussion on the streets, picking up the techniques of Cuban and Puerto Rican hand drummers.

While in high school, he enlisted as a conga player with the Eartha Kitt Dance Foundation, which offered classes at a Y.M.C.A. Ms. Kitt herself took him along to the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, where he performed with the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, his first professional experience.

At the urging of his family, Mr. Alias studied biology at Gannon College in Erie, Pa., and the Carnegie Institute for Biochemistry in Boston. Playing in Boston clubs by night, he met students from the Berklee School of Music, most notably the bassist Gene Perla.

It was Mr. Perla who got Mr. Alias a job as a drummer with Ms. Simone, even though he had no experience with a full drum kit. He handled the challenge and eventually became Ms. Simone's musical director. In 1969, his work in her ensemble caught the attention of Miles Davis, who was then developing the hazy jazz-rock that would suffuse his album "Bitches Brew."

Hired as an auxiliary percussionist for the album, Mr. Alias ended up playing a trap-set part, along with Jack DeJohnette, on the track "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down." His lean and loosely syncopated beat, inspired by New Orleans parade music, is one of the album's most distinctive rhythms.

Mr. Alias played the role of trap drummer again on a 1979 concert tour with Joni Mitchell, in a band that included the saxophonist Michael Brecker, the guitarist Pat Metheny and the bassist Jaco Pastorius. A live recording from the tour, "Shadows and Light," is often cited as a favorite among musicians.

Mr. Alias was the first-call percussionist for a host of other artists as well, including the singer Roberta Flack, the alto saxophonist David Sanborn (with whom he toured as recently as February) and the pianist Herbie Hancock. As a conga player, Mr. Alias could augment a rhythm section in a way that was urgent but never intrusive.

He also had a hand in forming two bands: Stone Alliance, an electric fusion project with Mr. Perla and the saxophonist Steve Grossman, and Kebekwa, a percussion ensemble based in Montreal. Kebekwa was short-lived, but several years ago Stone Alliance reunited after a two-decade hiatus. The group has three recent live albums on the Mambo Maniacs label.

In addition to Ms. Futorian, Mr. Alias is survived by his mother, Violet Richardson Alias; his son, Charles Donald Alias Jr.; his daughter, Kimberlee Marisa Alias; and four grandchildren.

Johnny Jackson

by Steven Ivory : Givin' the Drummer Some

There are the Jacksons and there is Michael Jackson.

And then there was the Jackson 5.

The Temptations meets Sly & the Family Stone (they used to open their concerts with a rendition of Sly's proud, funky anthem, "Stand"), the dynamic original J-5 unit, which included Jermaine, left audiences spellbound and more experienced adult performers shuddering at the thought of taking the stage behind them.

The drummer for the J-5 was a young man named Johnny Jackson.

Even most hardcore J-5 fans don't know what Johnny looked like. There are very few photos of him and keyboardist Ronnie Rancifer, who rounded out the rhythm section of Jermaine on bass and Tito on guitar onstage.

However physically anonymous, Johnny's legendary sparkling red kit, its iconic double-bass drums emblazoned with one of the most famous music group logos since The Beatles, towered on its stand behind the brothers' customary stage lineup (Jackie in the middle, Jermaine and Tito on each end) like a funky, majestic pop soul altar.

I worshipped at the celebrated altar of the J-5 double bass drum set in the flesh in 1973, when I ditched high school class and with Don Minnis brazenly crashed a noontime Jackson 5 sound check / rehearsal at Oklahoma City's Myriad Convention Center for a concert later that evening.

Before security asked us to leave, I got close enough to touch those red drums, but didn't. My consolation was having Donny later snap a picture of me with a Jackson.

Three decades later in 2006, I'm wondering what is more surreal -- that Michael Jackson now owns "Stand" and the rest of Sly's StoneFlower Music catalogue or that J-5 drummer Johnny, 54, was found stabbed to death this March 1st in a Gary, Indiana home, after what neighbors said sounded like a lovers quarrel with the 44 year-old woman charged with his murder.

"Johnny was a good cat," reminisced Marlon, the Jackson I posed with all those years ago. He obliged me with a little info about the man who played behind my favorite drum set.

"His spirit was always up." Despite newswire reports, Marlon said Johnny was indeed a cousin; said he'd been with the siblings before they were known as the Jackson 5, the moniker given the group by a patient at a Gary nursing home where the group played. "She said, 'It's five of y'all; your name is Jackson -- you should be the Jackson 5."

When Motown signed the act in the late '60s and relocated the family to Los Angeles, Johnny was with them.

Was it Johnny's decision to play a double bass drum kit? "Yeah," said Marlon. "He was a good drummer. Kept time like a machine."

Though he studied archery as a hobby, Johnny had another passion. "Johnny liked the ladies," said Marlon.

Whose idea was it to put the J-5 logo on the drums?

"I don't know," said Marlon. "Somebody at Motown."

On the road, Johnny was about a good time. "Whenever we checked into a hotel, the first thing Johnny would do was fill his bathtub with ice and bottles of beer and leave his door open so crew members could help themselves. After everyone was sleep, he'd sneak out the hotel, which was against the road rules."

Like a kid inquiring whether someone had actually seen Santa Claus' reindeer, I asked Marlon if he himself ever approached the altar -- had he sat behind the fabled drum kit?

"I have," he said, in a tone that somehow expressed both nostalgic yearn and asked what's with the questions about the drum set, dude, all at once. "But I don't play. That was Johnny's thing."

Sadly, it was poetic that Johnny stopped playing with the Jacksons when the group left Motown for the Epic label in 1975. Legally enjoined by the label from calling themselves the Jackson 5, the group suddenly didn't have need for a red double bass drum set with Jackson 5 on it. "I really don't know why we stopped using him," said Marlon.

He last saw cousin Johnny in October of last year, during a Jackson family reunion at Neverland. "He was in a great mood," Marlon said. "Same ol' Johnny."

Ironically, from Neverland Johnny returned to Gary, Indiana. From behind a red double bass drum kit, he'd performed for kings, queens and heads of state the world over -- only to have his life end in Gary on a note sadder than the saddest R&B song.

Ray Barretto

Ray Barretto is survived by his wife Annette Rivera, his four children: Chris, Raun, Ray, & Kelly Barretto and four grandchildren: Jullian Barretto, Aja Peters, Arno Peters and Alex Peters. Information on funeral arrangements will be available soon...

Internationally renown artist Ray Barretto Passes This Morning

New York, NY - February 17, 2006 - Family spokesperson George Rivera announced this morning that Ray Barretto died at the Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, N.J. at 5 a.m. Annette Rivera (Brandy) who had been a constant by his side since he was taken to the hospital late last month was taken home to rest. We will get more information from the family later.

For nearly 40 years, conguero and bandleader Ray Barretto has been one of the leading forces in Latin jazz. His hard, compelling playing style has graced the recordings of saxophonists Gene Ammons, Lou Donaldson, Sonny Stitt, and guitarists Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell.

Born April 29, 1929, in Brooklyn, Barretto is one of the most prolific and influential Latin percussionists in the history of modern jazz. With a musical heritage as deeply rooted in the bebop jam sessions held in Harlem during the late-'40s as in his Puerto Rican ancestry, Barretto has spent over four decades refining the integration of Afro-Caribbean rhythms with the improvisational elements of jazz. Coincidentally, it was the tune "Manteca" recorded by Gillespie with Chano Pozo on percussion that drove Barretto to music. And it was a version of that same tune that became Barrettoís first recording with Red Garland.

Few artists have been as successful over the years at fusing these two genres as Barretto, an undisputed master of this style. A pioneer of the salsa movement, Barretto achieved international superstardom and released nearly two dozen albums with the Fania label from the late-'60s until salsa's popularity peaked in the mid-1980's.

Sherman Ferguson

Sherman Ferguson, a jazz drummer and a member of the faculty in the UCLA Jazz Studies Program, died from complications of diabetes on Jan. 22 at his home in La Crescenta, Calif. He was 61. Ferguson joined the UCLA faculty as a lecturer in January 2001 and taught a jazz ensemble class and private drum lessons.

"Sherman Ferguson was an extraordinary talent and a major figure in the Los Angeles music scene," said Kenny Burrell, founder and director of the UCLA Jazz Studies Program and a distinguished jazz guitarist. "He was a vital and well-loved member of the jazz faculty here at UCLA. Sherman represented the best of what a jazz musician should be. He was a master drummer whose talent and versatility allowed him to work with a large variety of musical artists. His passion for music and his deep interest in helping others made him one of the most respected teachers in the UCLA Jazz Studies Program. Sherman loved teaching, he loved performing and he loved people. He will be sorely missed."

Born in Philadelphia, Ferguson was a serious musician from a young age. His early influences were Max Roach and Roy Haynes. He studied privately and performed on the East Coast before moving to Los Angeles in 1976. He performed and recorded with a virtual who's who of jazz musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Burrell, Benny Carter, Horace Silver, Ahmad Jamal, Freddie Hubbard, Bud Shank, Eddie Harris, Jimmy Smith, Buddy Collette, Joe Williams, Joe Henderson, Tommy Flanagan, Pharoah Sanders, Gabor Szabo, Sonny Stitt and George Shearing. He toured extensively throughout the United States as well as Europe, Japan, Brazil, Martinique, Malta and Greece. He performed on various TV shows, including "The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd."

When Ferguson began working professionally in the mid-1960s he was equally at home in funk, ethnic and straight-ahead jazz settings. He first came to wide attention in Philly's popular jazz-funk fusion band Catalyst, alongside saxman Odean Pope (A Tear and a Smile, Muse, 1975). Ferguson did some outstanding work with guitarist Pat Martino in the early 1970s. His fluid, flexible percussion skills graced a number of Martino's albums of the era, including Desperado (1970, Prestige) and Consciousness (1974, Muse). After Martino recovered from his traumatic illness and memory loss, he often called upon Ferguson for his ensembles (Interchange, 1994, Muse). In 1976 Ferguson moved to Los Angeles where, under Kenny Burrell, he rekindled his love for supporting jazz guitar. Since the 1980s the drummer had covered the full spectrum of jazz: leaning into freedom with Bobby Bradford's Mo'tet and Pharoah Sanders (Crescent, With Love, Evidence, 1992); West Coast cool with Bud Shank (California Concert with Shorty Rogers, 1985; Serious Swingers with Bill Perkins, 1986, both on Contemporary) and the 1995 Kenton Alumni Band; bop with Eddie Harris and Benny Carter; vocal jazz with Lou Rawls, Ruth Brown and Karrin Allyson. Bassist John Heard was a frequent partner, and in the 1980s the pair worked in an acclaimed trio with pianist Tom Ranier. Other artists who benefited from his drum mastery include Tete Montoliu, Holly Hofmann, Horace Silver, Warne Marsh, George Shearing, Sonny Stitt, Ahmad Jamal, Joe Williams, Dizzy Gillespie and Joe Henderson.

Kenwood Dennard

... greetings from Curitiba, Brazil...

Recently (01/10/06) I performed a series of concerts and lecture demonstrations and master classes and private lessons in Curitiba Brazil.

Recently someone asked me regarding Brazil:

How's the beach?

Here's my response:
life's a BEACH! (and then u die)

my tendancy is to play play talk dance philosophize enjoy life ...

wish you were here! So Left to my own devices I'll enjoy my work. I know it's freezing back home in Boston.

Let me tell you! The very first day 01/09/06 I arrived at the hotel and had lunch with the promoter and bingo I had an activity to do.

I had no idea what was being asked of me... performing? teaching ? private lessons? class? playing in someone else's band? my own band? would I need charts so I could have others play with me? jazz? funky? blues? would I be expected to sing? would there be equipment? would I need my own? which equipment would I have.

Well it turns out I got there and there was a large body of students... I had to take a poll to figure out who they were and what they wanted. There was a keyboard in the room so I had it moved close to the drumset and bingo I just started drumming playing keyboard and singing. Man I just starting improvising - wailing - within 5 minutes I was soaked in sweat. But I didn't stop. yo that for me this was heaven. you can stick a fork in me after that cause I'm DONE. :-)

I must have played 1/2 hour straight but it might have been an hour I don't know. I opened up for questions and did a little more demonstrating and I was done. I bet I must have lost 2 pounds on the spot. That is what I like. I joked with the audience.

I said: "The reason I am sweating so much is because I was just released from a REFRIGERATOR! BOSTON MASS. :-)

Happy Holidays and thanks for the card! Hope all is well on your end this season. Have been keeping really busy this fall. Just finished up two months in Italy with an Italian popstar named Giorgia. Got home a week ago, and now headed back to Rome in the morning for New Year's Eve with her. Headed back over two more times in January for shows... thankfully, none coincide with NAMM. Then a few days after the last show, at the top of February, I head out with Stevie Nicks to Australia and New Zealand for five weeks...

Rick Latham

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

2005 was surely a year to remember. As I marked the 25th anniversary of my book, Advanced Funk Studies, with the DVD edition, the year was full of many exciting and meaningful events.

I performed a Guitar Center clinic tour in the states as well as several clinics in The UK and Europe, including Austria, Germany, Holland and Belgium. I was extremely honored to perform at the 2005 Percussive Arts International Convention, with my group, in Columbus Ohio in November. Also, in November, I was invited to present a master-class at The Montreal Drum Festival where I received an awesome award citing me for my contributions to the drumming community. Then, in December, Modern Drummer Magazine recognized my efforts with a retrospective article entitled Rick Latham "25 Years Of Funk".

These were all tremendously meaningful events for me and the perfect way to wrap up a truly great and unforgettable year. From the release of my DVD in January 05 featuring my friends and legendary mentors Louie Bellson and Ed Shaughnessy to the year ending with my feature article in Modern Drummer, 2005 will certainly hold a special place in my memory forever.

Not one to rest on any past accomplishments, I have charged into 2006 with a flurry of activity. At the January NAMM show I will release my New, Updated Edition of "Contemporary Drumset Techniques" which now features four accompanying CDs that include me performing all the exercises. This is over 4-hours of killer digital audio! The CDs will also be available separately for those who already have the book. My entire current catalog is now available in the digital format.

I'm now also hard at work on several new groundbreaking products for 2006 and you will be hearing more about these in the near future. Please watch my web site, future industry publications and email blasts for this exciting news. Clinics, Concert Performances, CD releases, Podcasts, Internet Radio, Educational Materials, Play-Along Tracks, Streaming Video, Audio Downloads and more are all in store for this year!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the local L.A. scene, I've been staying busy with gigs and some great sessions including a new CD with the "Jo Cuseo Blues Project", some killer demos with "Texas Blues Mistress" Terri Brinegar, a few festivals and concerts with my band "Rick Latham And The Groove Doctors", my steady Wednesday night jam gig with "Jon Burton and Blues Deluxe", writing and recording for my new, upcoming solo CD project, as well as a few jingles and cool T.V. cues. Oh Yeah, and I still love teaching privately as much as my schedule permits.

Please click on the link below to check out The Montreal Award, a snippet from The Modern Drummer Article, and a review from my UK Clinic Tour:

http://www.ricklatham.com/2005.html

The next link will take you to an mp3 sample of my Internet radio Podcasts series coming soon:

All the best for now, more to come soon.

Groove On!
Rick

PS. WOW, I just saw a killer review of my "Rick Latham Crystal Ball" Bass Drum Beater in the February issue of DRUM! Right On!!!!!

Check it out!!!!!!!!

Tom Teasley

Tom and Word-Beat partner Charles Williams are excited about the release of their new CD. "The Soul Dances" will be released in January 2006 and will be available on this website, cdbaby.com and amazon.com. Sound clips to appear soon on this website. With liner notes by noted writer Bill Milkowski and collaborations with a host of guest musicians and vocalists, this CD promises to be engaging and profound. "Drawing heavily on various African proverbs and traditional African-American spirituals, Word-Beat delivers ancient wisdom wrapped in powerfully percussive grooves and uplifting melodies. This second Word-Beat offering is a triumphant celebration of the human spirit in both song and verse, underscored by Teasley's coloristic approach to the drum set and a variety of hand percussion instruments from around the world and augmented by the dynamic presence of John Jensen's trombone, Bruce Swaim's tenor sax and flute, and Chris Battistone's trumpet. Together with Williams' deep, commanding baritone vocals they make a joyful noise that stirs deep emotions and heavy thoughts as it invites us to get up on the goodfootÖ This vibrant, energetic and eminently danceable music welcomes all listeners to celebrate while also offering food for thought and balm for the soul." Bill Milkowski

"Autumn Grooves", the first in a three-part series of benefit concerts Tom is presenting in collaboration with the Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church, was a great success. Close to $3000.00 was raised to benefit the Bryant Early Learning Center, part of United Community Ministries, which helps families in southern Fairfax County with high quality, affordable childcare. In partnership with Fairfax County, the BEL center provides developmental and health screening to young children and is a gateway to counseling, training and information to support parents. The BEL Center also serves teen mothers to help them finish school through Project Opportunity at the Bryant Alternative School. The BEL Center was established in 1986 to help improve the future outlook for children needing safe, high quality, affordable childcare in southern Fairfax County. This first concert featured musical influences from India, Africa, and the Middle East; with ancient and traditional instruments coupled with electronics. The December 18th concert, featuring the World, Wind and Percussion ensemble, Tom's collaboration with John Jensen and Chris Battistone, was a great success adding over $1000.00 to the total raised so far. The last in the series will be a Word-Beat concert on March 26.

Tom's clinic at the University of Maryland was also a great success. Hosted by NSO timpanist and Maryland faculty member John Tafoya, Tom worked with approximately 20 young percussionists. The clinic featured Tom's work "World Percussion for Western-Trained Musicians". Look for the pictures and a short movie on this site. Tom will be a presenter at this summer's percussion camp at the University of Maryland in July 2006. More details to follow. Tom's industry sponsors, most notably Sabian cymbals, Vic Firth Inc., Remo, Mountain Rythym, and the Cooperman Fife & Drum Co, generously support these clinics.

Tom has joined the educational team at Latin Percussion. He is very pleased and honored to be associated with this fine maker of wonderful instruments with a strong commitment to education. Tom and partner Steve Wright of the Wright Hand Drum Company are in negotiations with a production company for a new DVD that will be filmed later this year. Hoping for a Spring / Summer release date, Tom will feature Wright Hand Drums and other instruments that he endorses. Tom will use them in his unique way.

Tom continues to tour throughout the Eastern US. His new concert presentation, "Sol-Orchestra" is becoming very popular with people of all ages. Word-Beat will tour Berlin, Germany March 27 through April 6, 2006.
