MIAMIPercussion trio Talking Drums is known throughout the world for their spicy, original fusion of Afro-Cuban folkloric music with American funk. Now, group members David Garibaldi, Michael Spiro, and Jesus Diaz present their latest collection of pulsating grooves, melodies, and traditional rhythms in Tiempo, a new book/CD set from Warner Bros. Publications.
A play-along book for drum set and percussion instruments, Tiempo introduces players to a variety of traditional styles and rhythms, including Son, Salsa, Timba, and Guarapachangueo, which have served as inspiration for Talking Drums’ complex music. Each composition in the book is divided into parts for different percussion instruments, such as bongo, conga, bells, bata drums, drum set, and more.
Going beyond percussion, Garibaldi, Spiro, and Diaz have added bass, piano, and horns to their grooves in Tiempo so that the book appeals to all instrumentalists who want to understand how their rhythmic concepts fit into the larger context of today’s music. The book comes with two CDs of original music, mixed with and without drum set (and many of the main percussion instruments such as congas and timbales) for play-along, and separate rhythm tracks for jamming.
In addition to presenting Talking Drums’ unique compositions, Tiempo is intended to serve as a springboard for musical creativity. By providing insight into how they have melded diverse ethnic strains into a contemporary style, the trio members hope to encourage others to find their own unique sound.
"Tiempo is an expansive and inspiring experience, not only for percussionists, but for all instrumentalists on the road to self-discovery," said Ray Brych, percussion product line manager for Warner Bros. Publications. "It shows how different ideas, traditions, and influences can be woven together in a musical tapestry. As a follow up to their award-winning first book Timbafunk, this is sure to be an Afro-Cuban classic."
Not surprisingly, Talking Drums members’ musical roots span a variety of styles. Trio members have played with top artists and groups, including Tower of Power, Gino Vannelli, Natalie Cole, Buddy Rich Orchestra (David Garibaldi); Ella Fitzgerald, McCoy Tyner, Doctor John (Michael Spiro); and Dizzy Gillespie, Sheila E., Tito Puente (Jesus Diaz).
Suggested retail price of Tiempo is $24.95, which includes the book and two CDs
