MIAMI, Fla. -- Drummers of all levels who want to incorporate the lost art of brushes into their performance will want to check out Warner Bros. Publications’ recently re-released book/CD set, The Sound of Brushes.
Written by jazz great Ed Thigpen, the new book is a compendium of brush playing techniques and insights that its author has acquired over a stellar 50-year career in the music industry. Thigpen has earned international acclaim for his work with Oscar Peterson, Billy Taylor, and Ella Fitzgerald. He is considered the master of brushes and provides excellent examples of brush playing on the two CDs that accompany the book. There are clearly illustrated diagrams in the book that make it easy to follow the examples that Thigpen plays on the CD.
A very comprehensive work, The Sound of Brushes is a complete guide to brush playing. Topics covered range from a basic review of equipment, brush grips and rhythmic feels to more advanced sweeping techniques. The book also includes a series of exercises for single stroke, double stroke and multiple bounce strokes, as well as brushing guidelines for different musical styles, including swing, bebop, funk and R & B.
The Sound of Brushes book/CD set retails for a suggested $24.95
