The show also checks in with the current administration, hearing directly from U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige about President Bush’s commitment to school music and arts programs. Research has shown that studying music helps kids stay out of trouble and do better in their other subjects. "Report Card" traces the Save the Music program back to 1996, when VH1 President John Sykes visited P.S. 58 in Brooklyn and was by the music teacher that his music students were also his best academically. This experience later inspired him to start VH1 Save the Music. We hear from the kids whose programs have been savedand major pop artists who remember how much music programs meant to them when they were young. "Report Card" also reveals VH1 Save the Music’s goals and how the Bush administration views the issue, via an interview with Secretary Paige. In five years the Foundation has highlighted the value of music education and positively increased music participation for students across the country. "VH1 Save the Music: Report Card" delivers all the big moments in what has undoubtedly been a musical, corporate and philanthropic success story. Each school will receive new musical instruments to jump-start their band programs. To help raise awareness about the importance of music education and encourage Sacramento area residents to donate used instruments for the newly restored program, a music instrument drive will be held the week of August 6-10. The public is encouraged to drop off used instruments at the four Dimple Record locations in the Sacramento area throughout the week. The used instruments that are collected during the instrument drive will be refurbished by Northridge Music, a local music store and donated to the schools. The four Dimple Record locations that are collecting instruments are 2433 Arden Way in Sacramento, 313 East Bidwell in Folsom, 1701 Santa Clara Drive in Roseville and 6099 San Juan Avenue in Citrus Heights. ``I applaud AT&T Broadband and VH1 for their commitment to restoring music education in our public schools. Sacramento County is excited about the opportunity to participate in this program and we will continue to support music education in our schools,'' said Sacramento County Supervisor Roger Dickinson.
