USA Today, June 8, 2001, Features NAMM Weekend Warrior Program
On June 8, 2001 USA Today featured the Weekend Warrior Program, an initiative of NAMM The International Music Products Association. The Weekend Warrior Program encourages baby boomers from all professions to form bands with other boomers and perform at local venues across the country. USA today profiled doctors, dentists, lawyers and writers who are reliving their rock 'n roll fantasies by playing with other musicians.
The Weekend Warriors Program provides an easy way to get back into the fun of playing with other musicians, without the hassle of starting, rehearsing, booking and maintaining a working band. Disney and Mattel Join The American Music Conference
To Advocate For Music Education
The American Music Conference has announced that Disney and Mattel will include detailed brochures about the importance of music education in the boxes of 500,000 new toys, beginning in August 2001. The brochures will include information about research studies, which show that a child’s abstract reasoning skills are dramatically enhanced by their participation in music instruction. It also points out that playing a musical instrument can strengthen hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and may hold the key to higher brain functionality.
In 2002 all Fisher Price, Winnie the Pooh and Mickey toys will include a booklet with AMC’s advocacy message.

Program To Recruit and Retain Music Educators To Launch Fall 2001
In the fall of 2001, NAMM The International Music Products Association, Selmer, Hal Leonard, MENC The National Association of Music Education and Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser will kick off a program which seeks to encourage more people to choose and remain in careers as music educators. According to the American Music Conference Newsletter, the program, called "Music Making Makes a Difference," will accomplish this goal by:
<sum> Promoting Tri-M, the International Music Honor Society, and encouraging Tri-M students to consider music education as a career. <sum> Emphasizing music advocacy to MENC’s college music student association, CMENC, and encouraging students to pursue music education careers after graduation. <sum> Encouraging existing music teachers to remain in the field. <sum> Encourage teachers to use music advocacy materials like the Einstein kit in their own communities to help establish the importance of music education in school core curriculums.
