Cuban-born Walfredo Sr was one of the first to combine Afro-Cuban percussion instruments and techniques with jazz- and pop-oriented drumset stylings. His playing on a 1957 recording called Cuban Jazz still stands as a seminal work. Since that time he's performed with some of the world's greatest artists, in and out of the Latin idiom.
